What is BTEC Performing Arts?

The BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts is an internationally recognised qualification and is the equivalent of up to three A-levels. This multidisciplinary course explores all elements of the Theatrical Arts, designed to prepare learners for further study and careers in the Performing Arts Industry. Learners will partake in practical sessions with Industry Professionals exploring different genres of Acting, Singing and Dance. Candidates can choose to focus their study on an area of personal interest including Musical Theatre, Dance and Acting.

Training at our state-of-the-art facilities at Dubai British School Jumeirah Park, students will gain invaluable experience, performing on stage, devising performance material in our studios and recording vocals in our recording studio.

This course will build on technique, skill and knowledge and forms the ideal springboard into further education at vocational Performing Arts Schools and Colleges.

Overview

Our BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts Diploma is lead by one of the regions leading PA schools DPA run, in conjunction with Taaleem.

The course is unique as it is led by Lisa Scott-Lee from STEPS fame and Johnny Shentall, original WESTEND cast of FOOTLOOSE.

We offer Pearson Edexcel BTEC Level 3 qualifications in Performing Arts. One of the advantages to this course is Taaleem are proud to offer a blended learning opportunity to study BTEC’s along-side a selection of A-Levels, such as English, Mathematics and Chemistry. Option blocks are available on request.

BTECs are specialist work-related qualifications that are equivalent up to 3 A-Levels. With a successful track built over 40 years, BTEC International Level 3 qualifications are internationally recognised by governments, the Industry and Higher Education Institutions. Our DPA Teacher have all trained or taught at prestigious colleges such as Royal Academy of Music, Guildford School of Acting (GSA) Arts Educational, PPA, Masters and Performers. Another advantage is that our teaching staff are full time and reside permanently in Dubai.

Assessment includes a range of assessment types and styles suited to vocational qualifications in the sector. All assessments are internal (with no formal exams) but some mandatory units have extra controls on assessment and are assessed using Pearson Set Assignments. Additionally, some units are synoptic.

A Message from Our BTEC Team

Our 2 year, Pearson BTEC in Performing Arts is a Level 3 qualification and is widely recognised by industry and higher education as the signature vocational course. We embody the three fundamental skills from Performing Arts, dancing, singing and drama, to the curriculum, with a flexible, unit-based structure and knowledge applied in project-based assessments. The learner will gain knowledge on practitioners in a range of Performing Arts disciplines, along with their techniques, practical skills and be able to understand and critically analysis the context. Learners will experience the creativity of developing their own piece, along with rehearsal and performance process, where they shall have the opportunity to bring to life the skills, techniques they have learnt, and personal attributes which will be valuable across all areas of future study and work. This course develops intrapersonal skills such as, communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation. Interpersonal skills such as, self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development to become an all-round performer.

This exciting course is aimed at performers who have a passion for The Arts and a strong ambition to fulfil their

career goals as a professional Performer, Creative or Teacher of The Arts, in one of the fastest growing global industries.

The course has been designed by Industry Professionals who have first hand experience in the Music, Entertainment and Musical Theatre Industries and are passionate about passing on their knowledge to their students in order to fully prepare them for the various facets of the Entertainment Industry. It is the only course in the Middle East where students have direct access to professionals and can be given a valuable insight into what it is like to tour the world, shoot music videos and perform a lead role in a West End Musical.

All practical delivery will be overseen/given by DPA to ensure that students in Dubai receive a similar standard of world class delivery as the colleges in London such as Arts Ed, where Johnny taught full time, along with roles such as Head of Dance at PPA, GSA, Master and Performers, the latter where where he trained.

Lisa is from the successful Pop Group STEPS and is an accomplished touring performer. Both Johnny and Lisa are on hand to offer students their first-hand experiences as professionals in the Entertainment and Musical Theatre World all year round as Dubai residents and owners of DPA.

The course is designed as performance preparation and training for 16 to 18 year old students to study at a specialist three year placement to further their training in Vocational Collages and University Degree programs.

This course is designed to develop and nurture ‘Triple Threat’ performers, who are confident in all three disciplines of singing, acting or dance, to a professional and competitive standard, with the option of specialising in your preferred field whilst preparing them for a career in the Performing Arts Industry or further Education.

Course Content

The course is designed around 4 course modules over the 2 year period which entails:

  • Performing Arts skill development
  • The global performing arts Industry
  • Personal Performing Arts profile
  • Collaborative Performing Arts project

 

This course offers the equivalent to 2 A Levels for the BTEC Level 3 Diploma or 3 A-Levels with our extended Diploma.

The course will give an insight into the different roles and transitional skills that can be gained with training in Performing Arts. It supports learning on how the industry works globally, how to promote yourself, entrepreneurial visions within arts and guide future training pathways.

Where the course takes place?

Our First Class Facilities at Dubai British School Jumeirah Park include a 500 seater Auditorium and Theatre, Dance Studios, Recording Suite and purpose built 6th Form hub

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE in Drama, Dance and/or Music OR equivalent experience  English to be written and spoken at a sufficient level Dance training in one or more disciplines.
